British Sign Language

BSL is the language of the Deaf community. BSL has its own vocabulary, structure and grammar which is different from English. It is a visual, gestural language which uses handshapes, facial expression and body language to express meaning.

The East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre holds Sign Language classes every Thursday afternoon during term-time from 2.30pm - 4pm. These are held at the Centre at 8 St Leonard's Road, Eastbourne and also at Hastings Voluntary Action, 31a Priory Street, Hastings, Tuesday 2.30pm - 4pm.

The classes are very informal and anyone is welcome to attend whether they are a total beginner or already know some signs. It is an opportunity for students to polish up their Sign Language in a social environment. There are no exams, so no pressure. There is a small charge and light refreshments are provided.
